Janice Deringer

Perspective

"I'm passionate about being able to use both language and logic to help clients discover what's possible for them, and to uncover multiple scenarios for their financial lives. My goal is always to equip my clients so that they can take personal responsibility for planning their own abundant and prosperous futures."

After many years in institutional investment management, Janice particularly appreciates having a more personal focus through her work at Hewins as a professional investment consultant and advisor. "In my role at Hewins, I'm able to touch lives, one person, one family, one small institution at a time. It's the best integration of my experience with my interests that I could ever imagine."

Janice served as a Principal at Barclays Global Investors (BGI) for over 15 years, managing quantitative asset allocation, international indexed equities, transition services and the quantitative equity investment process from the U.S. She also served as the Interim Chief Investment Officer for BGI's Sydney, Australia office. She oversaw as much as $30 billion in institutional portfolio investments and managed large teams of people.

During this time, Janice was featured in Money magazine in a piece that focused on funds that perform well in difficult, down markets. In addition, she co-authored a chapter titled, "Development and Implementation of a Tactical Asset Allocation Model at Wells Fargo Nikko Investment Advisors" in Global Asset Allocation – Techniques for Optimizing Portfolio Management, edited by Jess Lederman and Robert A. Klein, 1994.

After leaving BGI, Janice provided special situations management consulting for institutional investment businesses. She provided interim management of indexed asset businesses, risk assessments of current investment processes and identified system needs to strengthen business advantages. Janice has also used her work experience to serve on the Board of Trustees for the Oregon Public Employees Retirement System. Janice's earliest work experiences included positions as a systems engineer at Charles Schwab and as a software consultant at Multisoft for their consumer finance product.

In an effort to give back to the community while utilizing her experience in institutional investing, Janice frequently speaks to women's groups on financial topics. She also serves on the Board of Directors of a non-denominational women's ministry based in Portland, Oregon, that provides classes and support as a way of encouraging self sufficiency. Janice's knowledge and experience, coupled with her community interests, motivated her to try her hand as an author. Her work-in-progress is a book titled, "Cents and $ensibilities – The Only Finance Book You'll Need from 18 to 80," which she hopes will give her a platform to express her passion for encouraging women to make well-informed financial decisions.

It's no wonder that this woman with a talent for both words and numbers has a wide variety of hobbies and interests that include tennis, global travel, driving antique automobiles and working with her golden retriever as a therapy team. Having lived for many years in the San Francisco Bay area, she has returned to her native Pacific Northwest and is enjoying the opportunity to service clients from both areas that she considers home.

Janice's deep experience base, sharp decision-making skills and her natural aptitude for communicating complex concepts with ease, all contribute to giving her a broad and unique perspective that she uses to help her clients make valuable life financial decisions.
